Color Bearer Welcome Reception
Bruce Guthrie
Starting the weekend out right! Sunset dinner on Pensacola Beach at the Hilton Pensacola Beach.
On April 21-23, 2017, Color Bearer members from across the country gathered in Pensacola, Florida, for our annual Thank You Weekend. They were invited to join exclusive tours, listen to keynote speakers, and participate in history discussions. With battles from four different wars taking place in and around the area, Pensacola is rich with U.S. military history and served a terrific setting for the weekend.
With the likes of Andrew Jackson, Braxton Bragg, and Bernardo Galvez leading campaigns in the area, military actions at Pensacola set the stage for the Battle of New Orleans, thwarted the British plans to reinforce Lord Charles Cornwallis’s army at Yorktown, and hampered the consolidation of Confederate forces in West Florida. On top of it all, Naval Air Station Pensacola helped train thousands of Naval, Marine, and Coast Guard aviators that served our country from the First World War to today’s War on Terror.
Color Bearers received an exclusive tour at the National Naval Aviation Museum, as well as Fort Barrancas and Fort Pickens two of the four forts that guarded Pensacola at the outbreak of the Civil War. Color Bearers walked the well-preserved grounds, and learned the story of local confederates who attempted to take the fort on the evening of October 9, 1861 but were defeated at the Battle of Santa Rosa Island.
Once again, everyone had another unforgettable weekend of history and fun! Check out photos of the event below:
