Chesterfield Bridge
Library of Congress
This span became militarily significant when soldiers arrived. Fortifications can be seen on both sides with Henagan’s Redoubt, held by Confederates as the battle opened, looming in the distance.
After the Battle of Spotsylvania, Confederate General Robert E. Lee took position along the North Anna River, where a series of engagements raged May 23-26, 1864. Union General Ulysses S. Grant’s troops forced Confederates from the Chesterfield Bridge, then used the bridge to maneuver around Lee’s right flank, ultimately unhinging the Southerners from their river defenses.
On May 25, 1864, photographer Timothy O’Sullivan recorded a series of photos of and near the Chesterfield Bridge over the North Anna River.
